Mini rant about Kiddie movies

I’m sure this is a subject dwelled on by mom bloggers before so I suppose it is just my turn to bring it up. But why is it that the mommies always die in animated kiddie flicks? The last three movies I watched with my son: Finding Nemo, The Tale of Despereaux and The Land Before Time had a mommy fish, the Queen and a mommy dinosaur all die in the first few minutes of the flick. Two out of the three were saving their child when they died but….what is it about killing off the mommy to tell a story? And who can forget Bambi?

Maybe I am just feeling mortal today. I found out that a woman I knew growing up died of breast cancer and a month ago, another gal I went to high school with died of a brain tumor. Both were moms and both were my age.

So that is my mini rant for the night. I’m going to go snuggle my son now.

  1. Since high school, I've always known I want to do my dissertation on the lack of positive female role models in Shakespeare and Disney and its effect on young women growing up. (Think about all the crazy/absent moms in both genres…lack of Queens in most of his plays, or they're scheming beeyotches, or crazy (Ophelia); in Disney, there's lack of moms in Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, etc., and the women are usually portrayed negatively — Snow White, Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians, etc.)

You hit my soft spot. Now if I can just start that Ph.D…
