Vlog Foray – Lessons Learned

For Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop, this week’s writing prompts included a: Bonus Vlog Option! 6.) Tell us the story behind the title of your blog. What is it? What inspired it? What other options did you consider? Are you happy with it?

I have never done a Vlog and now I know why. It is freaking difficult! I admire all of you that do it on a regular basis.

I wasn’t as uncomfortable in front of the camera as I thought I’d be but I had lighting issues, sound issues. And then there were the Me issues that included speaking too fast, too slow, too soft, losing my train of thought (this happens to me more often than I’d like), calling my kids by their names instead of nicknames, not looking directly into the camera, and not knowing what to do with my hands. I also got interrupted by my son, who came in to show me his Power Ranger Ninja moves and wanted to know who I was talking to and why I was talking to a camera. And my attempt at being funny by filming in front of my never-ending pile of laundry which is the bane of my existence just comes across as me being messy. So now you know.

But the best part about my foray into the Vlog experience is that I cannot share the video! My video is 2.23 minutes long and too big to post! I didn’t even think of that. I used my Olympus camera to create the video and I do not have any video editing software. The free software I found adds a watermark to the output and the sound is off so it looks like I am dubbing in a voice-over!

I own a Flip video camera and I’m kicking myself for not using that. I think I’ll stick to being a wallflower and stay behind the camera instead of in front of it from now on, but thank you Mama Kat, for the prompt. It gave me the opportunity to try something I never thought I’d do. And I’m not ruling out never creating another Vlog, but I will be much more prepared before my next attempt.

Lessons learned.

I bet you really want to see the video now too, right? Well, I’m working on it!

But until then, you can read more of the story of my blog/title on my About Me page.

  1. Totally laughing with you! I did a vlog today, or attempted it. Had bad lighting, screaming kids, and bags under my eyes. And then to top it off when I got the embed code off you tube it was set to PRIVATE and no one could see it anyway! Luckily a lovely fellow mama blogger alerted me to the situation and I figured it all out by 2pm. I started at 630 am!
You have my full an complete sympathies!

I don’t even have to see the infamous Vlog, to know how really sweet and real and entertaining

it was. You described everything so vividly that I actually saw you and your little guy and your efforts

    to make it perfectly, perfectly!

I loved it…you get an “A” for effort!

  3. Sorry you had such a hard time. I had a hard time too with the lighting. It just wasn’t bright enough where I wanted to do it at so had to move to the upstairs hallway, but then I had to be on the floor. Videos do take a lot longer to do than just writing. That’s why I usually will watch them when I come across them on blogs because I appreciate all the work that went into them. Maybe you would have better luck with your Flip camera. It sounds like your video would be funny! I would like to see it!

  4. LOL! I chose this prompt, but didn’t do the vlog either. I’m way too embarrassed and know I’d be messing my words up. Plus, now that you mentioned it, I remember trying to post a video once in the past, and it was too long. So, I probably would’ve had problems anyway.

    Have a great weekend!

  5. Everything you experienced is exactly why I didn’t do this prompt this week. I stuck to pictures of roses in my ‘hood (thanks for your comment on my post BTW).

I watched a couple of other people’s videos and they should have stuck to pictures of flowers too. I’m just sayin’.

  6. maybe next time ;)

  7. I did the vlog, but I also had issues with losing my train of thought (I do that a lot, even when I’m writing), forgetting to look directly into the camera, not knowing what to do with my hands. One of my hands was all over the place. I hope you’ll put up your vlog, though. Maybe for the next vlog, use a webcam? Not the best quality, but it does work.

    Here from Mama Kat’s. :)

Hi, welcome! I’m still trying to figure out how to get it up for viewing. It’s not horrible but it’s also not academy award winning. My son’s late minute appearance is cute though!

  8. You are way more brave than me! I read this prompt and thought immediately, no way. haha I just did a post on one of my newer blogs with self-portraits. Showing a pic of me is very hard…no way could I deal with sharing the voice thing, too. Silly, I know.

I think that you did great! While you were fiddling with the laundry, you reminded me of Sarah Jessica Parker in Girls Just Want to Have Fun, the scene where she’s standing in front of the new classroom introducing herself. :)

I’m visiting from Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop Thursday. Have a wonderful day!

  9. Love the history of the site name, and glad to be part of it. :)
